Onewheel Pint X Battery & BMS Replacement
Written By: Justin Velasquez
Difficulty: Moderate
Steps: 15 – 16
Time Required: 1 – 1½ hours
Introduction
If you’re not getting the range you once did from your Onewheel Pint X and a 72 hour balance charge hasn’t made things any better, use this guide to help you swap your battery and regain your freedom!
For your safety, power off your Onewheel Pint X prior to disassembly. This reduces the risk of electrical malfunctions and/or damage during the replacement process.
Note: Altering or damaging any component of your Onewheel Pint X during disassembly/reassembly may render your existing warranty void or lead to refusal of non-warranty service at the discretion of Future Motion, Inc. (the creators of Onewheel).
Step 1 Remove the fender/delete screws and fender/delete
- Caution: Make sure your old battery is discharged to 25% or less prior to removing it. A charged lithium-ion battery can present a fire or explosion hazard if punctured.
- Remove all four (4) screws using a TP20 bit.
- Note: Keep screws organized as they are easy to mix up and/or lose.
- To remove the fender/delete, apply pressure to each side of it, near the axle carriers, and pull it up and away from the Onewheel™.
Step 2 Remove the bottom bumper screws and bumpers
- Remove all ten (10) screws using a TP20 bit.
- To remove the front bumper, pull it toward the nose of the Onewheel™.
- To remove the rear bumper, pull it toward the tail of the Onewheel™.
- Note: If you are unable to remove the rear bumper by hand, you may use a flat head screwdriver to pry it away from the rails (be gentle).
Step 3 Remove the top footpad screws and footpads
- Remove all four (4) screws using a TP20 bit.
- Caution: For the front footpad sensor connector, turn (counter-clockwise) only the smaller part of the connector closest to the controller. Turning the entire body of the connector can damage it or your controller.
- Note: If you are unable to remove the footpad sensor connector using your fingers, you may use a Future Motion™ footpad connector wrench or a pair of long nose pliers (be gentle).
Step 4 Remove the left-side hub bolts
- Remove the two (2) bolts using a T30 bit.
- Caution: Be sure to use the appropriate bit as these bolts are prone to stripping.
- Note: If you find it difficult to remove the hub bolts with hand tools, you may use an impact driver to loosen them. Use ONLY impact rated bits.
Step 5 Remove the left-side battery/controller module retaining screws
- Remove all four (4) screws using a TP20 bit.
Step 6 Remove the left-side rail
- Caution: Be extremely careful not to damage the wiring harness as you remove the rail. The wiring harness can be gently manipulated in order to allow removal.
Step 7 Remove the right-side battery/controller module retaining screws
- Remove all four (4) screws using a TP20 bit.
- Caution: Be careful not to let the battery/controller assembly fall as you remove the last screw.
Step 8 Remove the battery/controller assembly
- Caution: Be extremely careful not to bend or damage the wiring harness while handling the battery/controller assembly.
Step 9 Remove the controller cover screws and controller cover
- Remove all eight (8) screws using a TS20 bit.
- Caution: Be extremely careful not to damage the controller gasket while removing the controller cover.
Step 10 Disconnect the controller XT60 and data connectors
- Remove the XT60 connector first.
- Remove the data connector by pinching the tab and gently pulling upward.
- Caution: It is extremely important that the connectors be disconnected in this order to avoid causing damage to your Onewheel™ controller.
Step 11 Remove the battery enclosure screws and battery enclosure lid
- Remove all eight (8) screws using a TS20 bit.
- Caution: Be extremely careful not to damage the battery enclosure gasket while removing the battery enclosure lid.
Step 12 Remove the BMS cover
- Remove the two (2) screws using a T8 bit.
Step 13 Disconnect the battery balance connector
- Remove the connector by pinching the tab and gently pulling upward.
- Caution: It is extremely important that the battery be disconnected in this order to avoid causing damage to your Onewheel™ Battery or BMS.
Step 14 Disconnect the battery XT60 connector
- Note: Remove only the XT60 connector on the left side of the BMS (the one attached to the battery).
** If you need to remove your Battery, proceed to Step 15 (Battery). **
** If you need to remove your BMS, proceed to Step 15 (BMS). **
Step 15 (Battery) Remove the battery
- Remove the battery by gently lifting up on the side closest to the connectors.
- Caution: DO NOT use sharp tools to pry the battery from the enclosure as a puncture can present a fire or explosion hazard.
Step 15 (BMS) Disconnect the wiring harness XT60 and data connectors
- Note: The wiring harness XT60 and data connectors can be removed in any order.
- Caution: When removing the wiring harness XT60 connector, be extremely careful not to hit/damage the small ceramic capacitors directly to the right of the connector.
Step 16 (BMS) Remove the BMS
- Remove the BMS by gently lifting up on it.
- Caution: The BMS is sensitive to static electricity and should be handled with extreme care. If you need to store it, an anti-static bag is highly recommended.
